Guaranteed QoS is highly desirable but not available in the current Internet. To this end, we have a software development project, for guaranteed QoS, designed for 14 postgraduate students. They are excited about the things they learned and getting ahead in the project. The project was subdivided into three parts: Guaranteed Internet QoS; QoS provisioning in Ad hoc Networks; and P2P file delivery. Dividing 14 students into three groups allow every student to do some literature search and gain a better understanding of the subject before they start their software project proper.

In the next stage, students are allowed to choose what they wanted to do next.  The project proceeds as follows: Guaranteed Internet QoS – implementation of the class-based FDPS scheduler; QoS provisioning in Ad hoc Networks – study how class-based FDPS can be implemented in Ad hoc Networks for QoS provisioning; and P2P file delivery – proposed how P2P protocol may be modified for real-time delivery for Internet video conferencing. A student may re-opt to join one of the three teams and a project leader for each team will be nominated. The project leader portfolio will be rotated to develop different students in each group.

In the SW project, the students will start a software development life cycle and submit the requirement specification documentation according to their project schedule. To write the requirement specification, each sub-project group has to conduct interviews with their customer/user manager. In this project, each group is allow two interviews and careful preparation of their questions is  necessary so that the project can be clearly specified.

Students in each group will select a project manager (PM) who will be responsible for managing their sub-project. Sub-project PM will organized and assign task to members in his/her group and produce a list of questions needed for writing the requestment specifications. Each project group will submit a project plan for their customer’s approval.

Note: Meeting on Thursday, Oct 15 has been reschedule to Oct 13. Meeting Rm D has been booked from 12.00pm to 2.30pm, Oct 13 for customer interviews. PMs are expected to work with their group and come up with the list of questions for their sub-projects before the interviews. Because each group is given only 30 minutes, careful preparation is the necessary prerequisite for a successful meeting with your customers.
